SALZBURG MEDICAL SEMINARS INTERNATIONAL

The Salzburg Medical Seminars International (the Salzburg-Cornell Seminars for Adult Medicine, the Salzburg-CHOP Seminars for Pediatrics, the Salzburg-Duke Seminars for Public Health and the Salzburg-Columbia Seminars for Neonatology) link US physicians practicing at leading medical schools and their affiliated hospitals with physicians practicing in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the former Soviet Union.
Under the auspices of the American Austrian Foundation, the seminars are funded by a direct grant from the Open Society Institute, which is matched by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science.
Seminars course covers a week. It included lectures delivered by leading qualified American and Austrian faculty's, discussions on presented reports, participation in medical-consultative TV-bridges, work in medical library with informational database of Internet-center.
Through December 2003, over 600 faculty members from the United States and Austria trained over 5287 physicians from more than 32 countries and regions of Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the former Soviet Union. The advances in telecommunications enable us to extend the reach of this program by transferring the contents of the seminars to CD-Roms and the Internet. An Alumni Network, Internships and Satellite Symposia for continuing education have been established in order to expand the reach and effectiveness of the American Austrian Foundation Salzburg Medical Seminars Program.

Main Goals of Medical Seminars are:
  • Improve health care by updating the knowledge of physicians.

  • Open the medical establishment in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union by inviting highly qualified English-speaking physicians to participate in the Internship Medical Program through an open competition based solely on merit.

  • Establish a network of well-trained, English-speaking physicians, maintain contact with them and foster their growth as medical leaders and teachers.

  • Stop the brain drain by establishing favorable conditions for personal contacts, partnership, and ongoing visits by faculty to their countries (satellite symposia), clinical conferences on-line and internships for additional training.

  • Found a global virtual medical school - The International Health Forum - by combining the American and Austrian faculty with our network of highly qualified physicians from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union.

  • Eligibility of Participants:
  • Practicing physicians with the ability to teach from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union.
